Why is offshore wind suddenly so cheap in the UK?

The price of offshore wind has dropped by 50% in two years in the UK – we asked the head of renewables at Scottish Power to explain what's going on

The cost of subsidies for new offshore wind farms has halved to £57.50 per megawatt hour (MWh) since the last government auction in 2015. Offshore wind in the UK is now not only cheaper than new nuclear, but is even competitive with gas.

Jonathan Cole, renewables chief at energy firm Scottish Power, explains some of the contributing factors.
