It was barely in anything before the 1990s, but today palm oil is in about 50% of all packaged goods on supermarket shelves.
It’s well known that the industry has been linked to massive environmental destruction, particularly in south-east Asia, but it’s not easy to work out whether the palm oil in any one product contributed to deforestation. Joe Sandler Clarke steps into the studio to unpack the complex reasons why.
